A Psychological Study of the Impact of Big-Five Personality on Employee Absenteeism

Abstract

Absenteeism is a serious problem in the garment industry in Sri Lanka. The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of personality on the propensity of employees in the apparel sector to be absent from work. Hundreds of employees took a sample using the judgmental sample. 87 employees were a valid sample. Here, 49.43% of females and 50.57% of males were represented.Five personality dimensions of the study participants were measured the results of the study concluded that openness to experience, compliance with conscience, consent had a significant negative effect on employee absenteeism and that Extraversion and Neuroticism personality patterns had a positive effect on employee absenteeism. The results of this study also concluded that the effect of personality on the propensity for employee absenteeism did not change with gender and marital status.
