It leads to higher employee commitment and productivity, which in turn contributes to superior organizational performances. Most employees working hours relying on a predefined schedule which was already developed by an organization. That work schedule may impact on employee job satisfaction, especially when organizations split working hours due to 24 hours’ service demands. Numerous studies have measured job satisfaction in relation to personal characteristics, organizational and environmental factors in various contexts. However, there is no any identifiable study related to work schedule and its impact to employee job satisfaction. So, this study will focus on that in order to fulfill the gap. The aim of this study was to identify whether there is an impact of work schedule on job satisfaction among employees in Sri Lanka.
This study adopted a mixed-survey research design using both survey and cross- sectional survey design. It is a quantitative research. Secondary data was collected by reviewing journals, articles, books and websites. Primary data was collected from the sample of 80 employees (N=80) in both public and private sector in Sri Lanka by using Sinhala translation of Job Satisfaction Job Survey (Spector,1997) and a self-developed questionnaire. Then the descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, T- test and linear regression were used to analyze data and test hypothesis. The study revealed that there is no any impact of work schedule on job satisfaction among the employees in Sri Lanka which implied by the t value of (t (78) = -0.025, p=0.980) However, standard work schedule was correlated with job satisfaction and it implied that when standard working hours get increased, job satisfaction of employees also increased. (r = 0.452, n = 42, p = 0.003) Further, the linear regression analysis results indicated that the job satisfaction of an employee can be predicted depending on annual working hours. The findings recommended that even though there was no any impact of work schedule on job satisfaction, organization should consider about work schedules and further studies should be carried out in the future.
