Trajectory of the Electoral Resurgence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian Politics after Independence
Abstract
India has multi-party system and after independence, the main political parties in India were Indian National Congress, Bhartiya Jan Sangh, National Socialist Party, Communist Party of India etc. After independence, India faced one party dominance of Congress System under the rule of Congress Party, under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi, but this congress system, infect, provided limited political and electoral opportunities for parties such as the Bhartiya Jana Sangh (BJS). Since after formation the BJP faced its first major election test in the State assembly elections of May 1980 one month after the formation, but BJP could notable to formation the government first time 1984 general elections the BJP secured only 2 seats with 7.71 percent of votes. But 16th Lok Sabha general elections were held in April-May 2014 the BJP landslide victory in 2014 Indian Parliamentary general election mark a tactic shift in Indian Politics. The BJP is the first non- Indian Congress Political Parties in Indian history formed government with a simple majority for the first time 1984 with 282 seats and got 31.0 percent vote share, in 17th Lok Sabha general election 2019 BJP also increase in 7 percent vote share and increase 31 seats. This article explores and covers the formation of BJP-its history and electoral resurgence in Indian Political arena.
