Abstract

The purpose of this study is to highlight the shifting images of Indian women in relation to traditional and contemporary values. With the help of an analysis of Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things and Manju Kapur's five novels—Difficult Daughters, A Married Woman, Home, The Immigrant, and Custody-an attempt is made to focus on this viewpoint. The woman of modern and post-modern India as portrayed in the novels of Manju Kapur and Arundhati Roy, both of whom are committed to promoting feminist and social issues, has been attempted here. In an attempt to construct her life and identity in her own way, the modern Indian woman is caught between tradition and modernity, as depicted in their novels.
