Abstract

One of the key drivers to India's economic success is its education system. The higher education market in India is estimated to be worth around $40 billion each year. Approximately 12.4% of students in the country currently pursue higher education. India would require an additional 800 to 1,000 institutions and approximately 40,000 colleges in the next ten years if it were to increase its current percentage of 12.4% to 30%. This study analyses various statistics to highlight the evolution and current state of higher education in India, as well as the major difficulties that the sector faces. This report also includes a summary of the government's major activities as well as suggestions for how to address these issues. The concepts provided in this article were first presented at the International Conference on India Emerging, held at IBA in Greater Noida, India, on February 24th and 25th, 2011.
